Right now I run 2 different small businesses out of my home and I couldn’t be happier! It is so awesome to jump out of bed and make that very short trek to my desk chair. Gone are the days of getting up at the crack of dawn, racing around to get ready and tackling the traffic jam that is always waiting on me no matter what time I leave. I almost feel guilty watching my husband labor through this routine every day, but I wouldn’t give this up for anything.

Even though I enjoy great freedom within my home based business, it requires great organization and time management to produce success. At times working from home requires more out of me on a daily basis than any traditional job I have ever had. If you are not careful with your time, you can arrive at 5:00 and realize you haven’t achieved anything that you wanted to. It is so easy to get distracted by straightening up the house, throwing in some laundry, running some “quick” errands, and before you know it the day is gone. This is why it is so important to set some ground rules and focus on your time management. I have tried to help out by listing a few simple rules to follow:

1: Be realistic with yourself. – You might want to start with asking yourself a few tough questions. Can I do this? Do I have what it takes to stay focused and ignore all the household distractions? Can I work to meet the deadlines while still retaining my freedom that I worked so hard to achieve? Freedom is great but it doesn’t pay the bills and if you don’t have the focus you need, this could be a disaster waiting to happen. Before you give a home based business a try, ask yourself the tough questions and try your best to answer them realistically.

2: Treat it like a job. Set goals everyday for yourself and work to achieve those goals just like you would if you had a traditional job. Set a routine and live by it! Schedule yourself everyday: Monday 8-5, Tuesday 9-6 and so forth. Schedule time for 15 minute breaks and a lunch just like you would at a traditional job. Remember this is how you have chosen to pay the bills and that means it is definitely considered a real job.

A spouse fits that description well because they are looking out for what is best for you and the family as a whole. 4: Separate work time and family time. – To manage your time working at home efficiently, you have to delegate what you spend your hours on. Set you’re the number of hours you need to have for working your home business and concentrate on that alone, if possible. However, when the end of the day bell rings, show the same commitment to your family as well.

5: How organized are you? – This is another very important question you need to address. De-clutter your home business surroundings. Concentrate on putting things away when you are finished with them, both on your computer and in your filing cabinet. Label everything in folders both online and offline. Being organized can lead to your success more quickly.
